Lessons from Haiti

Coordinates is an online magazine, based in New Delhi, that covers geopositioning and other geotechnologies, with the intention of making information about developments in these fields more accessible to end users.

The May 2010 issue includes Lessons from Haiti, an article that describes how the UN-Spider program -- established for just such emergencies in 2006 -- worked in Haiti, how its operation had to be modified, and what lessons were learned.

EarthView and general geography

If you enjoy learning about geography, be sure to follow not only the Geography Department blog, but also the EarthView blog. We use it to share not only news of EarthView's travels, but also a wide variety of stories that we think will be of interest to the students who participate in the program. Recent posts have covered an early Chinese globe, the Amazon river, fresh water, and tectonic activity. Sign on to see what is coming next!

Department Alum on NPR

BSC Geography Graduate Dr. Phil Klotzbach continues to make us proud! He is a research scientist and lead forecaster for the Hurricane Forecast Team at the University of Colorado.

Most recently, he was featured on NPR's Talk of the Nation Science Friday, one of the premier science programs on public radio. Tune in to the program to hear Phil's thoughts on the upcoming season.

Incidentally, geographers should try their best to catch Ira Flatow's excellent Science Friday program every week -- either online or on the air on Friday afternoons. It is a free, continuing education in science of all kinds.
